Get your hands dirty and help plant a food forest!

You’re invited to make the Earth a little greener, Roanoke a little more food resilient, and your hands a little dirtier!

Nestled in the foothills beneath Read Mountain, Outback Orchards welcomes you to help plant a range of food producing trees such as hazelnuts, elderberries, and peaches. We’ll also be planting native perennial plants, as well as flower and garlic bulbs to support local bees. Your help will contribute to the farm’s overall effort to plant a community food forest. We will send you home with some freshly laid eggs as a thank you and a food voucher to come back and enjoy the ‘fruits’ of your hard work!

You will are also welcome to check out the farm’s various permaculture projects underway, our colorful array of chickens, and enjoy the many baby calves and their mama cows roaming the surrounding fields.

Bring your closed toe shoes, water, good attitude and we’ll provide the tools, plants, and all the guidance you’ll need to plant a tree, or two. Whether this is the first tree or plants you’ve planted or your 100th – all are welcome!

This event will also be mindful of the COVID-19 safety precautions and require all participants to have a face mask on their person at all times. We will practice the proper spacing to avoid having to wear masks while doing the actual planting.

Select from a range of times to partake in the tree, native plant, and bulb planting throughout the weekend. We look forward to meeting you and working along beside you!
