Music: Cinematheque
Free music on the Elmwood Stage!
Cinémathèque was formed in Roanoke, Virginia in 2011. Since its founding, the goal of the band has been to provide an outlet for producing and performing a wide array of cinematic music. Niche genres, especially surf rock, exotica, spaghetti westerns, afrobeat, and Ethiopian jazz, serve as the band’s main influences.
In its early years, the band’s lineup was a revolving door, but always hinged on founder and guitarist Ben Hudson. Early band formations played at clubs, DIY spaces, and special events in Southwest Virginia, as well as out-of-state festivals. The live sound featured spring-verbed guitar leads shadowed by eerie organs reminiscent of Italian and French thriller and horror films of the 1960s and 70’s. These cinematic roots culminated in the production of recordings for small scores, short films, and commercials.
In 2018, a renewed focus on live performances with an expanded lineup led to a remarkable reincarnation that highlighted the strength of the band’s repertoire as dance music. The current band consists of musicians from rock, jazz, latin, and classical backgrounds. This diversity enables powerful solo and arrangement opportunities in live settings. In addition to brewery and club shows, Cinémathèque has played many festivals and special events, including Kirk Fest 2019, RIOT Rooster 2019 (at The Virginia Transportation Museum), Roanoke Arts Pop! 2022 (presented by the Jefferson Center), Steppin’ Out 2022 in Blacksburg, and Forkapalooza 2023.

Music: The Ambassador
Free music on the Elmwood Stage!
“The Ambassador” is… Stephen Gabriel Lewis, born in Virginia in 1980. Much of his decision in choosing the performer title “The Ambassador” was based on his mother’s words to him throughout childhood encouraging him to be a leader rather than a follower and to be a peacemaker. As Webster defines it, “a diplomat…accredited as representative from one country to another; an ambassador of good will.” The moniker went hand in hand with his passion for traveling and learning from other cultures while sharing and shaping his own. He found what many others who have sought to quench their curiosity for questions on faith in humanity have found—“All of human nature shares a harmony no matter the geographical or political divisions. No matter the race or creed, we can all feel love, desperation, hope, fear and the struggle and joy that is life. Staying conscious of these concepts enables us to focus not on the unfamiliarity in our differences as individuals/cultures but on our similarities as people. We can revel in the fact that we don’t all wear the same clothes, eat the same meals or play the same music. It’s exciting to know there’s always more we can learn from each other” – S.G. Lewis. Throughout his songwriting, Lewis has made it a point to couple thought provoking lyrics with a positive message written with today’s youth in mind, to encourage, exhort and capitalize on the importance of family, community and relationships…
Gabe, as his friends know him, has been playing guitar and composing music and lyrics since age 14. The tunes he listened to from his older brothers music collection (John Lee Hooker, Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Zeppelin, U2, etc.) and the old Motown and beach hits that would play on his parents’ radio influenced his early musical tastes. Finding a love for reggae, hip hop and R&B early in high school, The Ambassador would never again be interested in limiting himself to any particular musical genre. Lewis has been both a student and a teacher overseas and professes the invaluable lessons of character building as a result of leaving one’s comfort zone and venturing out into the world. “Learning the ways of other cultures allows us to better reevaluate our own society and who we are as an individual” –S.G.Lewis. Finding friends both near and far has no doubt been influential in his music.
It was in 2004 that he returned to the U.S. from working as an English and Music teacher in Korea to begin work on a partnered project “The Seed ” (www.TheSeedSound.com) as well as hone his skills as a solo performer. Lewis toured, wrote and recorded with The Seed as their frontman/guitarist, releasing their self-titled debut album in April 2008. While living in Virginia from 2005 to 2008 he hosted live showcases entitled “The Ambassador Presents…” featuring various Blue Ridge valley musicians sitting in from show to show. It was also during these years that he continued to tour the east coast with The Seed, gaining valuable road experience and sharpening his song writing skills. In February 2009, The Ambassador decided to head west and plant new roots in sunny San Diego, California. Since relocating, he has performed and recorded with some of SoCal’s finest reggae/dub musicians, attributing to the “fuller sound” that is prominent on both the New Roots (2011) and Cali Love (2015) album releases. After releasing “The Ambassador Presents…” EP in 2009 and the Haiti Relief Benefit EP “Sunshine” in 2010, The Ambassador’s first full-length solo album entitled “New Roots” was released in 2011. It was nominated World Music Album of the Year at the San Diego Music Awards and Album of the Year at the Virginia Reggae Awards, receiving radio play from Oakland’s BigUp Radio, UC-Berkley Radio, San Diego’s 94.9fm and 91Xfm and L.A.’s own Reggae Connection with Chuck Foster and garnered positive reviews from the likes of ThePier.org, MusicBailout.net, Nice Up’s Tom Orr, City Beat, The San Diego Reader and more. Though Lewis continued to hone his song writing skills in the wake of New Roots, he performed only a handful of shows over the next two years choosing instead to focus on investing in his own studio and spending more time with his wife Kate and their newly born daughter Noelle. Since beginning work on a new album, he has had the itch to begin touring and performing more consistently once again.
His latest full length studio album “Cali Love” is set for release in May, 2015 and is a product of his first 6 years living in coastal San Diego and the laid back beach culture, lifestyle, new friendships and music that made that period a memorable one for him. Once again, Lewis teams up with friend and co-producer Andrew Mencher of Wisdom and Sound (New Roots 2011, Live in Ocean Beach 2012) to create a polished and versatile set of tunes featuring top notch session players and guest vocalists that is sure to inspire loyal fans and new listeners alike. Whether seeking substantive lyrics and a meaningful message or simply craving a soulful vibe to groove to, stay tuned in for more positive works from The Ambassador.

Music: The Firewater Tent Revival
Free music on the Elmwood Stage!
The Firewater Tent Revival is from Atlantic Beach, Florida. Born and raised in North Florida the guys will make you want to dance with their funky mix of Folk and Roots music!!!
Founded in 2010 by the remnants of an Atlantic beach punk rock band gone rogue. Once called The Hopeless, Dave Smith (rhythm /lead vox), and Jon Deering (Bass) originally formed the band simply so they could keep playing music together. Soon adding members Nigel Ledford (Banjo), Paul Morrisseau (Volin), Jeff Hoff (Sax/Harmonica), Kris Whatley (washboard, yep that’s really an instrument…) and several rotating featured artists who would join in at will through the bands open door policy, the one thing show goers could expect, is that they would never know what to expect, but it would always be a good time.
Powerful performances of Americana stylized covers, touching on a variety of genres, mixed with several relatable originals mostly written and arranged by the bands lead Dave, would have venue patrons dancing all night, and wanting to know where they could get their next taste of Fire Water. Quickly finding themselves in high demand the schedule filled out fast, becoming regular features at live venues throughout the city such as The Fly’sTie Irish pub and Jacksonville’s hardest working, family owned, Bold City Brewery. Now, several years and many new members later, the core has changed and become much more permanent. The additions of Paul Morrisseau (fiddle), and Jeff Hoff (saxophone/harmonica) in 2013 followed by the only member with true bluegrass roots, Nigel Ledford (banjo) in 2014 has rounded out what is known today as The Fire Water Tent Revival and the future is looking bright. The group recorded their first EP Sinkin Boat in February 2015. Two months later in April they played their way into the hearts of the Jacksonville public, winning third place in the popular crowd funding festival One Spark as voted for by the people. “When it isn’t fun to do any more it’s over” is the perspective the band maintains, and for six years running that’s exactly what it’s been. The set list features songs from well-known artists like “The Devil Makes Three”, “Hank The Third”, and “The Grateful Dead” mixed with 10 to 12 originals. The typical fan finds themselves staying for an extra hour and ordering another round because “These guys said they’re playing til close!”
Folkrock? Punkgrass? Who can say, but if you’re looking for a whiskey snortin, happy go lucky, good time band then The Fire Water Tent Revival will deliver.

Music: Abby Bryant & The Echoes
Free music on the Elmwood Stage!
A music minister’s daughter turned fierce frontwoman, Abby Bryant has cemented her presence as a standout in Americana and soul with her band’s debut album Not Your Little Girl. Bryant’s raw vocal talent supported by the confident and dynamic backing group The Echoes and establishes a strong foundation for the band in the world of vintage-inspired Americana and soul rock.
Playing for church services under her father’s direction, Bryant recalls early memories of singing a solo as an angel in a nativity play and backing up the church band in her small-town community near Charlotte, North Carolina. It wasn’t until she attended Appalachian State University that Bryant began to seriously consider a professional career in music. Forming the beginnings of the group with her friend from back home Bailey Faulkner, Bryant merged her love of the sound of soul and American roots music embodied by artists like Etta James and Bonnie Raitt with Faulkner’s similar passion for American blues and Faces-style rock.
After graduating from college and working with a number of part-time band members, the two relocated to Asheville, NC to form a proper band and quickly began heavy touring that kickstarted an organic fanbase throughout the Southeast.

Music: The Hackensaw Boys
Free music on the Elmwood Stage!
Roots music shapeshifters Hackensaw Boys have been making audiences holler and dance since way back in 1999. Formed in Charlottesville and now based in Lynchburg, Virginia, this hard traveling group has built an international following for their high-energy performances and down-to-earth presentation. Despite their roots in traditional music, their homegrown aesthetic (bolstered by the “charismo,” their calling card percussion instrument handmade from cans and other metal objects) belies their contemporary approach to songcraft and showmanship. Hackensaw Boys’ music today has just as much in common with the straight-ahead sound of the Del McCoury Band as it does with the indie rock of Pavement and the modern folk of the Avett Brothers and Mountain Goats. Their most recent LPs merge an old timey sonic palette with a folk-punk sensibility, with poignant lyricism, focused arrangements, and a deep groove all held together by bluegrass chops. Coming out swinging after the pandemic release of A Fireproof House Of Sunshine and 2022’s Hackensaw Boys, they’ve brought this sound on tour dates all across the US, Canada, and Europe, including appearances at ROMP Music Festival, Paaspop (Netherlands), and Tønder Festival (Denmark).
Hackensaw Boys are currently gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of their most beloved albums. Love What You Do was released in August 2005 on Nettwerk Records. Compiled from sessions that took place in Charlottesville, San Francisco, and Amsterdam amid constant touring, so many of its cuts remain fan favorites to this day. “Sun’s Work Undone” and “Alabama Shamrock” showcase the band’s more delicate side with spacious instrumentation and enigmatic lyrics about love and longing. “Kiss You Down There” still gets requested at virtually every show, and “We Are Many” continues to be perfect fodder for the group’s electrifying encores. The latter, with its foot-stomping rhythm and shout-along chorus, has come to exemplify what many people love most about seeing the band live: that a Hackensaw Boys show isn’t a bluegrass show, it’s a rock and roll show played on banjo and fiddle with all the spirit of a hoedown.

Try on Oboz Footwear and Have a Tree Planted!
You read that right, just trying on a pair of Oboz footwear will contribute to the One More Tree program.
The One More Tree program has planted more than 6 million trees in sub-Saharan Africa since 2007. Ordinarily, with the program, a pair sold equals one tree planted. At GO Fest, as the Official Trail Partner, Oboz will plant a tree for every pair simply tried on. Seems like a pretty solid way to do some good at GO Fest!
Who knows!? You may just walk home in your new favorite pair of hiking shoes.

Be prepared to put on a special caving helmet, and crawl and climb through 150 feet of artificial cave passage. Watch out for the stalactites and other fragile cave objects! Try not to touch the objects because you will lose points in the computer scoring system for each object that you touch. CaveSim is NOT virtual reality, and there are no screens inside, but monitors on the outside of the cave allow parents to watch on cameras as kids explore. While you visit, you’ll learn from CaveSim staff who are real cave explorers and do cave Search and Rescue. Be sure to also try vertical cave rescue on the 12-foot-tall CaveSim ropes tower. See how tight a space you can fit through in the CaveSim squeezebox. Children age 4 and under must be accompanied in the cave by a parent or very responsible older sibling. Make a Seed Ball with the Roanoke Master Gardener Association
Join us at the Roanoke Master Gardener Association’s booth for a fun, hands-on activity where you can make your very own seed ball! We’ll provide everything you need—wildflower seeds, clay, and water—to create these compact, eco-friendly mini gardens. Seed balls are a great way to plant wildflowers that support local pollinators like bees and butterflies. Stop by our booth to learn about the importance of wildflowers in promoting biodiversity and take home a seed ball to plant in your garden or yard!
Why Seed Balls Are Beneficial:
Seed balls are a simple and effective way to plant seeds, especially in areas where the soil is poor or where traditional gardening methods are difficult. Encased in clay, the seeds are protected from the elements, birds, and other wildlife until conditions are right for germination. Once the seed ball is placed on the ground, rain will break down the clay, allowing the seeds to take root. Seed balls are also great for introducing plants to urban or neglected areas, helping to create habitats for pollinators and contributing to a healthier environment.

CaveSim
Sponsored by Blue Ridge Grotto and the Cave Conservancy Foundation, come check out an incredible mobile cave exhibit that is visiting Roanoke from Colorado! Adults are welcome to explore, but CaveSim does contain narrow passageways that adults may find very difficult. CaveSim does provide accommodations for people with disabilities.

Gaga Ball
Girl Scouts are hosting Gaga Ball, this is an activity open for all to come and enjoy together. Game rules and a moderator supplied for maximum fun!
